B2 - In class today, I passed back a few pieces of graded work, then I collected the optional flashcard assignment from several students. We were able to go through the most recent Benchmark Assessment today in this class. I passed out the folders, had students read their essays and check their scores, then I asked them to rewrite one of the paragraphs, correcting their errors. In addition, they wrote a paragraph telling me how they felt they could improve the essay if they were to do it all over again, focusing on three character traits rather than as many as 10-12. I collected these paragraphs for a small grade, then I discussed the Poetry test and gave students a general outline to use for formulating their essay for the test. In class, we practiced with the song "Banana Pancakes" by Jack Johnson. This song has been used for the test in the past. Students had about 45 minutes to practice writing. At the end of the block, I had them work in a small group to share their ideas and talk about what they wrote. Assignment: Poetry test in class on Monday. For the test, you will be given a song and a poem to choose from. You will then write a six paragraph essay. The only way to prepare for this is to practice with the essay you started in class today. This is the best way I can tell you to prepare for the test. Bring your notes.... you'll need them.
