May 9, 2012 (Gold)

G1 - Crossword and Word Search for Vocab. List #2 DUE.  Daily Oral Grammar Exercises #11-14.  I collected Daily Oral Grammar sheets for a grade today.  Next, we read "The Suitors" (handout), "The Test of the Bow," and started reading "Death in the Great Hall."  Students completed study guide questions as we read each section and turned in the worksheet for "Beggar... Suitors... Test".  We will have to finish reading the story in class on Friday.  Assignment:  You have a vocabulary test over Odyssey List #2 on Friday.

G2 - Passed back graded work.  This class received Mythology research papers back today.  We discussed what their scores mean and how I looked at them in terms of a "Mastery" learning scale.  I reassured the kids that they will have more practice with these skills throughout the next three years, and they will improve with more practice.  Daily Oral Grammar Exercises #11-14.  I collected Daily Oral Grammar sheets for a grade today. Next, we finished reading The Odyssey.  We read "The Trunk of the Olive Tree" and students turned in the last study guide.  With the remainder of the block, we played Vocab. Bingo.  Assignment:  SAT Vocab. Test #12 on Friday.

G3 - Rough Drafts of the Trend Analysis paper DUE today for peer-editing.  I ran through some samples and asked students to CAREFULLY peer-edit today.  These papers probably have a long way to go, but I ask that you do everything you can to make sure it is the best it can be for Friday when I take them home for the weekend.  PLEASE make sure you include Works Cited and Works Consulted with your Rough Draft.... my feedback will mean nothing to you without them.  Assignment:  Rough Draft of the Trend Analysis due to me on Friday.

B2 - Returned vocab. flashcards.  Daily Oral Grammar exercises #11-14.  Next, we finished the story today.  Students completed the study guide questions for "Death in the Great Hall" and "The Trunk of the Olive Tree."  This worksheet was collected for a grade.  With the remaining time today, we played Bingo.  Assignment:  SAT Vocab. Test #12 on Thursday.  

B3/B4 - Vocab. G1 - Daily Oral Grammar Exercises #9-10.  Finished reading "The Cattle of the Sun God" handout today.  Next, I gave them a timeline (notes from overhead).  We then read "Father and Son," and students turned in the worksheet ("Cattle of the Sun God" questions on front side and "Father and Son" on the back of that worksheet... do it all).  Next, we read "The Beggar at the Manor," and students answered the questions for this reading on the study guide.   At the end of the block, I gave them the crossword and word search worksheet for Vocab. List #2.  Assignment:  Complete the crossword and word search for List #2.  If you were absent, please catch up on the readings you missed today and turn in the study guide for "Cattle of the Sun God" and "Father and Son".

G2 - Collected SAT Vocab. G3 - Checked draftwork.  Students were asked to have a revision of the Intro and the body section they completed for last Thursday.  In addition, they needed to show me two more body sections.  The rest of the block was spent working on drafts.  Assignment:  The Rough Draft is due for peer-editing (the whole thing) on Wednesday.  PLEASE keep working on this.  The better it looks when you give it to me on Friday, the more helpful the feedback will be from me.

B2 - Collected SAT Vocab. Flashcards for List #12 (last set!).  Daily Oral Grammar Exercises #9-10.  Today, we were able to read a bit more than I had originally planned.  We read "The Beggar at the Manor," "The Suitors" (handout), and "The Test of the Bow."  Students completed the study guide for these three readings and turned it in today.  We had plenty of time, so we went on and read "Death in the Great Hall" and finished that part of the last study guide.  We will finish the story in class and play Bingo on Tuesday.  Assignment:  Prepare for Bingo!  If you were absent, please catch up on the readings you missed today and turn in the study guide.

G1 - Passed back some graded work, and students recorded scores in their binders.  Daily Oral Grammar Exercises #5-8.  Next, we read the handout for "The Land of the Dead," and students completed the study guide questions as we read.  We read "Sirens; Scylla and Charybis" next.  Students turned that study guide in today for points.  Next, we began reading "The Cattle of the Sun God" handout, and we were able to get about half-way through that one.  We will finish that in class next time.  Assignment:  Study vocab. list #2.  Test next week.  If you were absent, please complete the readings and study guides we covered in class today.

G2 -  Daily Oral Grammar Exercises #5-8.  Next, we finished reading "Sirens; Scylla and Charybis".  Students completed the study guide and put it into their notes section of the binder.  Next, we began reading "The Cattle of the Sun God" handout, and "Father and Son" in the book.  Students completed this study guide and turned it in for points today.   Assignment:  SAT Vocab. flashcards for List #12 due next time.  If you were absent, please complete the readings and study guides we covered in class today.

G3 - Checked Draftwork for today (Intro and one body section).  Shared some samples from the past.  Students worked in class on their laptops the entire block today.  Assignment:  Revise what you brought in today.  Add another two body sections (approx. 4 more pages) for Monday.  KEEP WORKING! :)

May 1, 2012 (Gold) MAY DAY!

G1 - Crossword Puzzle for List #1 and Synonym/Antonym worksheet DUE.  Vocab. Test for Odyssey List #1.  After the vocab. test, I gave the class the definitions for List #2 (I used an overhead transparency for this... the definitions aren't in the book).  Next, we finished reading  "The Cyclops," then we read "Circe, the Grace of the Witch".  Students completed the study guides as we read.  (I collected "Circe" worksheet for a grade.)  At the end of the block, I passed out copies of "The Land of the Dead" (handout), and we started reading it before the bell rang. Assignment:  IF you want to make flashcards to use to study for the vocab. test, you may do that.  They will not be collected for a grade, but if that helps you, I would encourage you to do this.  No additional assignment.  If you were absent, please make sure you read the sections we covered in class today and complete the study guides on your own.  Be sure to turn in the one for "Circe, the Grace of the Witch."

G2 - SAT Vocab. Test #11.  Students received SAT Vocab. List #11 after the test.  Next, we read a handout for "The Land of the Dead" section of the story.  Students answered questions as we read.  We were then able to start the next section, "The Sirens; Scylla and Charybdis" (p. 1130-bottom of 1133).  Students were only able to complete #1 on the study guide for that section.  Assignment:  SAT Vocab. Flashcards for List #12 due on Monday.

G3 - Collected remaining Comparative Critique Final Drafts today.  Returned Writing Plans.  Checked outlines.  Shared two articles about real-world plagiarism issues, then gave students a copy of my Plagiarism outline and a handout to show them examples of a block quotation, etc.  Assignment:  Introduction and one body section of the paper due for peer-editing on Thursday.  You should have roughly three pages typed.  Be sure to cite THOROUGHLY and refer to your sources consistently and often. 

April 30, 2012 (Blue)

B2 - SAT Vocab. Test #11.  Students received SAT Vocab. List #11 after the test.  I passed back and went over the Mythology Research Paper today.  We talked quite a while about what their scores and my comments really mean.  Next, we read a handout for "The Land of the Dead" section of the story.  Students answered questions as we read.  We were then able to start the next section, "The Sirens; Scylla and Charybdis" (p. 1130-bottom of 1133).  Students were only able to complete #1 on the study guide for that section.  Assignment:  SAT Vocab. April 27, 2012 (Gold)

G1 - Passed back any graded work I had (G1 received research papers back today), then we did 4 Daily Oral Grammar Exercises (#1-4). Next, we ALMOST finished reading "The Cyclops" (p. 1114-1123). Students answered the questions for the study guide as we went through it. Assignment: If you were absent, catch up on the readings you missed. Vocab. test over List #1 on Tuesday. For homework, complete the vocab. crossword puzzle with the synonym/antonym exercise on the back.

G2 - Passed back flashcards and any other graded work I had, then we did 4 Daily Oral Grammar Exercises (#1-4). G3 - Collected Writing Plans from everyone and Comparative Critiques from several students today as well. Distributed copies of a sample outline in MLA format, then we went to the computer lab for the rest of the block. Today was Senior Out-to-Lunch Day, so students came back a little late from lunch. They had the rest of the block to work in the lab. Assignment: Several people have final drafts of the Comparative Critique DUE next time. Everyone needs to complete a full outline for next time as well. You will be drafting this paper out in the middle of next week, so please be ready with your sources gathered. The drafting stage is going to go very quickly, and you cannot afford to get behind at this point in the semester.

April 26, 2012 (Blue)
